Over The Hills

This piece is based on a poem of the same name by Edward Thomas. The music was one of three pieces composed and performed by Amanda Jane Fox especially for the 20th Anniversary Concert of the Portsmouth District Composers’ Alliance, held on 27th June 2009 at Steep parish church. The piano accompaniment was performed by Valentina Seferinova.

“Over the hills” is more of a ballad, in the dominant key, light classical in style with continuous quaver movement in the piano helping to set the mood. Taking the liberty of sectioning off the poem into a verse chorus format gives it structure and also allows the singer to enjoy the beautiful words.

The Dark Forest

“The Dark Forest” has a lively tempo and a repetitious rhythmic accompaniment with subtle harmonic changes and also a jazz influence, including time signature changes which helps the vocalist manage the lyrics with more ease and balances the phrasing and overall effect of the piece.

Like The Touch Of Rain

“Like the touch of rain” has a repetitive accompaniment throughout, a laid back tempo and jazz style textured vocals. With very subtle changes of harmony, combined with a simple melody, it evokes a similar style to Sondheim.
